Over the centuries, Croatian folklore has grown and developed into a rich & unique tradition.  The enormous number of dances, songs, costumes & traditions make Croatian folklore exceptional.  Throughout 15 centuries of recorded Croatian history, Croats have inhabited only a tiny area of the world, yet always seem to adapt and grow into any cultural or enviromental change.

For you to understand the true meaning of Croatians and how their traditions are held, we are giving you a brief outlook on what we, as Croatians, do to keep these traditions going.  Although it is next to impossible to briefly describe Croatian folklore, we will be giving you an indepth look on what Croatian folklore really is.

We will take a close look at such things like, the different zones that seperate Croatia and how they associate with the dances.  The different regions of Croatia and events that we that are held to keep these traditions alive.

Alpine

This zone consists of Hrvatsko Zagorje, Prigorje, Medumorje, Bilogora, Podravina, Turopolje, Banovia and Pokoplje.  Its distinct dance form focuses more on couples opposed to circle or grouped dances.

Adriatic

Areas following and bounded by the Adriatic Sea identify with this zone.  Regions that are found here are Dalmatcia, Hrvatsko Primorje, Istra and Boka Kotarska.  In these regions, dancing and singing rarely go hand-in-hand; they are kept seperate.

Northern areas have a dancer leading a dance, while the Southern area's have a Kolovda (someone who calls out the steps to be done next)
Dinaric

The largest of the Croatian zones.  They consist of Hercegovina, Bosna, Lika and Dalmatinska Zagora.  Croatia's oldest folk dances are found in these area's.  They form kolo's in the traditional sense, with plenty of opening and closing movements.  Dances rarely have accompanied music.
Panonian

Slavonija, Posavina, Moslavina, Baranja, Backa and Srijem make up the final cultural zone.  They are traditionally considered the wealthiest areas of Croatia.  Circles of small or large groups are danced in rythm and a unique form of quick and intricate bouncing known as drmes.  Singing while dancing is a common form of expression and the tamburica has replaced many of the older gajde and flute instruments.
